Beads as man earliest commodity for trade and artistry, have been used to represent complex social circumstances relating to wealth, rank, political history and religious beliefs throughout history. Every life event – birth, marriage, death and sickness – can be conveyed in this kaleidoscopic canvas.
Similarly chairs can display a rich social tapestry, they can go on to exist much longer than a persons life span. They are often symbolic revealing memories of the people who have debated, risen, surrendered and healed in them.
I’m excited to be working closely with a very talented team of couture beaders in India. Each piece is meticulously sewn by hand and takes approximately 3 weeks to make. The design on each chair is unique and the result of many months work. I place each bead digitally before they are translated onto canvas.
I then upholster them on to bespoke chair frames designed by me and built by my local forge on Dartmoor. So much care and attention has gone into each piece. Please contact me for more information. New pieces will be added to the site soon.
